Deer Pond Trail

Deer Pond Trail is an easy trail near the lake. It goes through different kinds of forests and ends at a tranquil pond, perfect for a picnic. The hike is not hard and most of it is flat with only a few small hills. You can do either the loop or the trail straight in and out.

I like to start at the parking area off of Rt. 3/30 if I am doing the loop. From the split of Rt. 3 and 30, go .6 miles heading towards Tupper Lake. The parking area is on right. Head to the left as you start walking and follow an old paved road. Follow the road for a mile or so. It runs parallel to Rt. 3/30. Towards the end, look for a trail to your right, in among the trees. Take that trail, heading towards Deer Pond. You will first go through a balsam forest, then you come to a small pond. Continue on.

You will come to a point where you turn left to go to Lead Pond. Take that path and you will be at Deer Pond shortly after that. After sitting by the pond, head back to the trail and continue on around the loop. You will pass over a creek and walk on a boardwalk. All of it is very pleasant hiking. The loop measures 6.6 miles. If you want to hike straight in to the pond and out, park on the left of Rt. 30, 1 ½ miles from the split of Rt. 3 and 30. Hike straight in, crossing over 2 creeks with bridges and going on a boardwalk. You will come to a sign pointing to Lead Pond. Follow it and you will come to Deer Pond very quickly. This route is 2.4 miles in one way, barely taking an hour. Turn around to come back out.
